Okay…they’re cool and all but Ed and Lorraine need to stop. They consistently do the utmost. I’m not sure what’s with this Insidious/Conjuring/Annabelle/Ouija conglomerate making the same kind of movie 6 times…BUT this sequel is shockingly more entertaining than the first. Conceptually there’s too much going on; they start in Amityville, and end up in England. Personally I’m not a fan of the British accents. After the last season of Tales from the Crypt, I’m noticing the accent is really just a cheap trick to hold viewer attention. Here though, I think they serve as an update to the precursor films with groups of paranormal investigators (there’s that famous English one that I of course can’t remember the name of right now) trying to help a broken and haunted family. More specifically, between the English haunting experiment groups, the babadook and the clingy man…spiny..skinny man? Whoever, seem like they come from the same box…like this movie. Assemble a flick. However, I can respect that it did what it was supposed to do for a horror movie, it followed the sequences, it had the jump scares, the super cool effects, the turning point, all that. I did appreciate the attention to certain details – the things scattered in the background, the consistently 70s vibe, and the quality of acting. But I did think the end was rather suddenly obvious. The film is set up trying to determine allegations of a real supernatural force at work…and then they in about 5-10 minutes have it all figured out. At least it was quality entertainment if unoriginal.
